Garbage Disposal Not Working? Try This Before Calling a Plumber

A dead garbage disposal usually isn't a dead garbage disposal. Before you replace the whole unit, or pay for a service call, run through this short checklist. Half the disposals we're called out to look at in Boise just need a 90-second reset.

Step 1: Is It Completely Silent?

If you flip the switch and hear absolutely nothing, no hum, no click, the unit has tripped its internal overload protector.

If it still does nothing, check the kitchen breaker and the GFCI outlet (often in the cabinet or on a nearby wall). Reset both if needed.

Step 2: Does It Hum But Not Spin?

A humming, non-spinning disposal has a jammed impeller. The motor is trying to turn but something is locking it.

Common culprits: chicken bones, fruit pits, twist-ties, silverware. If you can see the obstruction, use tongs or pliers, never your hand, even with the switch off.

Step 3: Slow Drainage After Running

If the disposal runs fine but water backs up in the sink, the problem isn't the disposal. It's the drain line downstream. Try cleaning the P-trap underneath, or call us for professional drain cleaning. In Treasure Valley homes with hard water, mineral buildup in the line is a common cause.

Step 4: Leaking

Leaks at the top usually mean a worn sink flange or putty seal. Leaks from the bottom mean the internal seals have failed, that disposal is at the end of its life and needs replacement. Side leaks at the discharge or dishwasher inlet are usually a loose hose clamp.
